The prodigal dogs

We've been worried about Boscoe, our adopted Walker Coonhound. Since deer season was over and would not come back in for five days, Arnie turned him out on Monday morning. He only made short chases and returned a couple of times a day until Wednesday when he and Jack (the Schafers' dog) disappeared for 5 days.

He has disappeared for 2-3 days before, but we began to worry after four days. Finally, when Kelley went into the back of the pole barn to feed Tuesday morning, she found two very tired and emaciated dogs laying on a bed of hay. Boscoe - who had become filled out after 8 weeks in his pen - had lost tremendous weight and his ribs and pelvic bone were showing. Jack hadn't lost any weight, but we think that is because he can't keep up with the long-legged Boscoe and probably didn't cover as much ground.

We suspect that they get on the trail of a coon or a deer and then when the trail leads past a house with female dogs, Boscoe hangs around there for a couple of days. We plan on surgically removing that urge before we turn him loose again.

As you can see in the next picture, Boscoe only got up from his hay bed long enough on Tuesday to try to wash off a dirty spot on the barn door.
