Unexpected late fall color

Crape Myrtle

It's the second week of November and most leaves have fallen around our house. We worked yesterday at cleaning up the leaves near the woods over in the side field - which is soon to be turned into more garden. There isn't a lot of color left except for some of the smaller maple trees inside of Schafers' woods across the road.

On the west side of our "cabin garden" however, our Crape Myrtle is providing quite a show of red/orange/yellow in each bush. We had never noticed this fiery display before, but now that the bushes are 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide, it is hard to miss them. They were bargain buys five or six years ago when Arnie bought them on clearance for a buck apiece. He bought them to be the main dark green background for our summer flowers, but they have developed into a spectacular centerpiece when everything else has wimped out.
