Winter greens

While Kelley was painting the fence on Saturday, Arnie finished digging the hole for the hotbed. The hole is about seven feet long, four feet wide, and two feet deep. Once the frame (with a hinged glass roof) is built, the hole will be filled with 18 inches of horse manure and straw, then topped with good garden soil. The heat from the composting manure/straw will heat the good dirt on top, allowing lettuce and swiss chard to be grown for most of the winter.

Once the winter is beginning to wind down, the manure will be removed, replaced with fresh, and then next year's garden plants will be started. It's a beautiful thing...
