The homemade top bar hive
Since the bees were a short-notice project, there have been a couple of mistakes. One was putting the crate and sugar water can beneath the hive. Many of the bees have been clinging to them for nourishment. Dad's co-worker advised to move the can up into the "attic" of the top bar hive so that the bees would be drawn to the top of the inside of the hive (the "ceiling") where they will theoretically start their combs. Someday we'll look back at this first attempt and laugh at it.
