We got Lady for Abbey on her eighth birthday. She has been a fixture on the hill for a long time, she was even visible in the pasture in most satellite photos taken from outer space on Google Maps. Now she is buried at the very top of her hill looking over the same river bottoms that she kept an eye on for the last ten years.
It was sad seeing her go down hill for the last five weeks. The vet said her heart was hopelessly sick and that we'd need to put her down soon. She rallied a couple of times, even eating heartily and making her happy noise when we came into the barn. She really worsened in the past two days and we knew this would be the week. Before we could make arrangements, and while mom was feeding, she went down and could not get back up. Abbey was able to comfort her as we waited on the vet.
It has been a tough three weeks - losing our smallest pet and now, our largest pet. That's life on a farm though, and we're happy to have known her.
