Back in October, we began building a hot bed so that we could have winter greens from the garden. It was completed just in time for cold weather. The manure that fills the 2 1/2' deep hole beneath the good planting soil wasn't as warm as it should have been and the back side isn't completely covered with dirt (yet), but it has remained warm enough inside to keep kale, lettuce, and swiss chard alive and growing into late January. We will be eating fresh greens from it this weekend and since the coldest weather is probably behind us, the remaining plants will probably be transplanted back out into the garden in March.
