Orioles

The best photo we can get with the small lens we have

For three years now, a pair of orioles has nested in the elm tree behind the house. Orioles are pretty rare around here.
They build an odd hangy-down nest. It became obvious during this week's storms why they build them the way they do. To avoid predators, the nest is at the very end of a very flimsy limb. During one storm, we watched the next swing wildly in the wind, moving as much as five or six feet. Without the deep nest, the momma oriole and her little ones would have been tossed out.

  1. Hey Arn! You may not see this comment...I was just going back through the archives and saw this and just had to say that God has to be smiling on his friend Arnie for him to have rare to Southern Indiana orioles in his yard...since Arnie is a Baltimore Orioles fan!
