Chicken Hawk!

A long shot of the chicken hawk (the way we like him - a FAR-away white speck in a tree)

Dad just happened to come home for lunch today and caught a hawk perched on the wire directly over the chicken pen. Fortunately, it appeared that the chickens were safe for now, because all were either in the coop or under it. Also, the hawk hadn't been successful yet or it would have been somewhere eating a dead chicken and not still on the wire.
Now, it's illegal to kill or injure a hawk (federal law), but nothing says you can't scare the daylights out of them. Dad got out the 12 gauge loaded with some weak 7 1/2 shot and aimed in the general direction of him. Three shots with pellets whizzing past and the noise of it all hopefully got the point across. We realize the hawk was just hungry, but there are plenty of mice and rabbits elsewhere for him to feed on.
