Betsy takes defense seriously
It has been a long season for the 8th grade Lady Trojans. Everybody knew it would be since the team was winless the previous year. The best chance at a win was last night at Washington Catholic. The girls got their first lead of the season at 2-0 and kept the lead throughout the game. Then the ref evened things up artificially.
A friendly WC mom told us that this particular ref gets into confrontations at every game he officiates, whether it is soccer or basketball. He had already gotten into it with some parents in the seventh grade game and then made sure to take out his frustrations on the team in the second game of the night.
With a good-sized lead in the third quarter, he called enough fouls on the girls to put WC in the double-bonus with three minutes to go in the third quarter! That means he had called 10 fouls on the girls in three minutes. That is unheard of, especially since our girls don't play much defense.
So many girls fouled out that the last three minutes of the game were played with only three players. Having a 5-3 advantage (6-3 if you count the ref), WC came back and won in the last few seconds.
It was so bad that it would have been funny had it not been the team's best chance at a win. Maybe next time...
