Yorkies are chicken-killers. We remember that Millie killed a chicken twice her size a couple of years ago. Now, Lucy is displaying the trait. Dad and Betsy built a "chicken tractor" yesterday and Lucy spent the entire afternoon and evening trying to figure a way to get in to the poults. It's comical, but we'll need to really watch the situation. She could easily kill all of them and at $2 a bird times the feed and time we've invested in them - not to mention the expense and time invoved in starting over - we don't like the consequences.
We'll be building one or two more chicken tractors because chicken feed is up to $10 per bag (We thought the government said there isn't much inflation!). The tractor(s) allow the chicken to forage for grass and bugs outside of the pen without being endangered by predators (like Lucy). When they've sufficiently eaten up the bugs and enough grass/weeds, the tractor just gets dragged to a new location.
