They decay where they lay (the weeds, that is)

The weeds were established

Although most people got their gardens going much before now, we've purposely delayed planting for a couple of reasons. First, there is still a chance of colder weather and we don't want to have to replant or have to guard against it. Secondly, many of the things we grow are intended for winter storage, so it isn't good if things get ripe too early.
We're also attempting to go completely primitive this year. We don't intend to use any power in the garden. No tiller. No weedeater. No lawnmower. Only hand power.
This means that all garden areas will be loosened with broadfork and spade, and all maintenance will be done with a sharp hoe and a garden rake. We'll see how it goes...

The chickens won't be banished until the seeds/plants go into the ground

The chickens are feasting on the weed seeds, grubs and worms that are exposed during garden prep

The entire garden was finally 100% weeded with the sharp hoe - all is left to decay where they lay
