Stuck-up sports

What is it about the east and west coasts and their obscure sports that only have followings at the "elite" colleges? Dad noticed lines of buoys in the canal near Princeton, New Jersey and figured out what they were for since Rutgers and Princeton University were nearby. One day he saw a lot of preppy college kids gathered at the water's edge near town and they were preparing to put their super-long rowboats into the water. He couldn't hang around and watch, but he did manage to catch this cell phone picture of a single rower practicing while going to evening office hours at Kepner Tregoe.
The trip will be complete if he can only watch some rugby, lacrosse, polo, and curling now. We wonder if those northeasterners play cornhole, a game that rednecks can appreciate.

  1. I wouldn't include rugby in the list of snooty northeastern sports. I learned to play rugby at Purdue and there's quite a good college rugby league in the big ten.

  2. That's a good point, John. I guess it was more the attitude of the New Jersey-ites that play them than it was the sports themselves. They could make washers or basketball "horse" into snooty sports.
There was an instructor that was on the arrogant side and he liked to talk about his weekend rugby matches. He was the reason I included rugby. I suppose I should re-write that to emphasize snooty athletes rather than snooty sports. I guess I just was not impressed with the self-importance of New Jersey residents.
Can you tell I did not like New Jersey?
