Arnie's first turkey...ever

Arnie, Rick Hunckler, Charlie Wecht, Bob Case, and Rob Stewart hunted over the three day weekend at Holliday Landing, Missouri on the banks of Lake Wapapello. Arnie had been hunting turkeys for three years but had not yet gotten one. He and Bob were good friends at Oakland City College and Bob invited him down.

He met Rick and Charlie on a late winter bowhunt in Pike County, Indiana when they all happened to be hunting on Line Road when the temperature was in the low single digits. Rick and Charlie hunted this weekend with their Bighorn custom recurves, while Bob, Rob, and Arnie all hunted with single shot 10 gauge goose guns.

What is funny about this photograph is that the turkey has no head. The 3.5 inch 10 gauge magnum load at 15 yards took off the head. In those days, it was no small deal to get a turkey. Even though it was in the Ozarks, the success ratio for turkey hunters was very low.

Also, notice the old Pepsi can, the old Coleman tent, and the camo pants - they were new at the time, and Arnie is still wearing them today (2009). The pants are now at least 23 years old.
