As a seventeen year-old Freshman at Oakland City College (later to become Oakland City University), Arnie redshirted due to his young age and his recent knee surgery. He practiced the entire season, but was able to play intermural ball because he wasn't officially on the Oaks' roster.
The team had a mediocre season due to the fact that they were the smaller school in nearly all contests, but when pitted against schools of similar size in the NLCAA tournament, they placed second. They lost to Sullivan College of Louisville in the final game of the 16-team tournament.
