Arnie's grandparents, Ed and Louise Howes, lived at 1614 Crawford Street in Terre Haute. They rarely came down to visit Arnie's family in Petersburg because they didn't own a car or drive. Sometimes, Arnie's dad would drive up to Terre Haute and bring them down for a week or so. Those times were always a treat for Arnie because it was usually in early squirrel season and Grandpa Ed would go hunting behind the house with Arnie and his dads and brothers. This didn't happen often because they were always scared of leaving their things for a week - a fear brought on by a lifetime of living in Terre Haute and being convinced that the streets were infested with criminals preying on senior citizens. This may have been true, but regardless, this fear was the reason that Ed and Louise did not come down more often.
Most of the time, they sat around the kitchen table and smoked cigarettes and drank Falls City beer. If it was warm weather - and it usually was when they came down - they sat in the shade and smoke cigarettes and drank Falls City beer.
Notice the large crabgrass lawn in the background. That is where many epic football, baseball, and rugby games were played with the neighborhood boys.
