Thanks to the politicians in general, and Obama and the Democrats in particular (and their over-spending/money printing), chicken feed has risen from $7.50 three years ago, to $13.50 now. We can't justify feeding that expensive feed to the chickens right now since they are not laying. We probably won't be able to justify it in the summer when they are laying either.
So...right now, the chickens are free-ranging even though it means chicken poop on the driveway sometimes and landscape mulch getting all scratched out of place. Dad is building a new chicken coop in the pole barn and then will fence in additional pasture so that we can get them to more bugs and grass without putting up with the messes. It wouldn't take very many bags of feed to equal the cost of new fencing and gates.
